HGGC Is Taking On The ‘Amazon Effec

A private equity firm based in Palo Alto is taking on what it called “the Amazon effect.”

Consider that once dominant companies like Sears and JC Penney are filing for bankruptcy protection, or on the brink. It’s because these once household words have fallen badly behind — or never truly developed — technological-based operational techniques that behemoths like Amazon not only invented, but continue to innovate within and have mastered.

HGGC is the Palo Alto-based firm ready to take on the “Amazon effect.”

The firm announced recently that it will merge MyWebGrocer with Mi9 retail. Both companies are backed by backed by General Atlantic. The new company will be called Mi9. HGGC is a shareholder along with General Atlantic and Respida Capital. HGGC acquired MyWebGrocer in 2013.

HGGC CEO and co-founder Rich Lawson points out that Amazon spends 20 times as much on R&D that the other top 20 retail companies combined. If other retailers expect to compete, they simply must ramp up their own R&D and adopt the technologies, infrastructure, logistics and distribution strategies that have enabled Amazon to dominate the retail sphere like no other single entity in history.

Lawson added: “Retail is at a tipping point.” He went on to say that his firm has the technology to help those retailers still out there who are struggling to overcome the Amazon effect.

Mi9 Retail is a software provider based in Miami. It assists traditional companies manage merchandise, take and process orders, provides data analytics and point-of-sale technology. Now bolstered by the investment power and vast expertise of the HGGC team, the company is poised to help any retailer anywhere in the world do battle with Amazon — and win.

HGGC was founded in 2007 by former NFL quarterback and Hall of Famer Steve Young along with Richard Lawson, Jon M. Huntsman, Gregory Benson and Robert C. Gay. The firm concentrates its efforts on middle-market companies. It uses a strategy of acquisitions, leveraged buyouts and market recapitalization to bolster the entities it accepts into its portfolio.

Sectors where the firm concentrates its efforts include grocery sales, car dealers, insurance agents, marketing firms and others

Sunday Riley: The Inspiration Behind Her Skin-Care Products

Have you ever heard or tried the skin-care brand Sunday Riley? For many, Sunday Riley is frequently recognized for its minimalistic no-nonsense skincare packaging. The products themselves prove to be effective in many ways.

Inspiration Behind the Brand

In an article, we take a look at an interview with Sunday Riley. In the beginning, it briefly describes how Sunday Riley began. It states that the creator and owner of the brand wanted to combine “science-based active ingredients with botanicals” in her products, which was missing in other skin-care products available today.

Not A Chemistry Experiment

After talking about inspiration, the article moves on to talk about Sunday Riley’s background. She says that her learning was hands-on while on the job. Trial and error were the bases for finding the perfect formula for her products. Her outlook was geared towards perfecting her techniques to an “art form,” leaving behind “too much science” without the personalization when creating a product.

Sunday Riley Products

Further, in the article, Sunday Riley is asked about her products and of them which product she is most proud of. Generally, she states that she is “proud of all of them.” However, when she loses the confidence in one product she immediately discontinues it from her brand’s line up. The article continues to discuss different products from her line including Good Genes, Tidal, Juno, and U.F.O to just name a few. She goes on to tell us her normal “skin-care routine” in a span of a week using her own products. She also states that she is interested in making products for hair later in the future.

What’s In a Name?

Later, Sunday Riley is asked about her unique name. She says that, coincidentally, her father named her for business reasons. She briefly describes her childhood and how she is glad she was named Sunday Riley by her father.

The article concludes with a discussion about her cosmetic line that she later discontinued. Today, Sunday Riley has developed a foundation that includes at least twenty-shades for the vast variety of unique skin tones her consumers have. Her aim is inclusivity, to “represent everyone.” It ends with the involvement of friends and family to test out her new foundation product.

Edwin actually went to MIT where he studied biologics which is the field he worked in for a long time. But he never wanted to develop these medications and products instead he found that he had a joy for making sure the product was of quality and marketing that.

Because he has a good background and truly understands how these medications work he has always been able to market them well and even get them passed through the FDA with a smooth process. All of the drugs that he worked with passed and went on to be marketed for use. The products were safe and even safer than previous options that patients had before these medications came onto the market. But now that chapter in his career has closed as he has become the CEO of a huge marketing firm. The marketing firm in Florida that he runs is leading the race in finding new ways to market as technology is always evolving.

All of the marketing that his firm does involves using the technology around that we have and is new to the market because he understands that is what is currently working. A lot of marketing firms have a hard time because those that run it are still stuck in the past trying to do things the way they have always worked but that just does not apply to today and what consumers will pay attention. The company offers pitches to any other company that is looking for a marketing firm to help them manage their services as they have an open door policy.

Parental Advice From Dr. Saad Saad: What to do When A Child is Choking

Doctors all over realize how difficult it can be for parents, especially when there are countless fears and dangers that could potentially harm their child. Experienced pediatric surgeon Dr. Saad Saad hopes to lift some of that burden with his advice and recommendations. Life Lessons from Dr. Saad Saad, Pediatric Surgeon and Dr. Saad Saad Medical Missions | Chronicle Week

Every parent has the fear of their child potentially swallowing a foreign object. Young kids, especially during their “terrible twos” phase, have enough curiosity to make parenthood difficult and unpredictable. Children are constantly exploring the world by using all of their senses, including taste. Many children will swallow a small object, which will run its course through the entire digestive system with no complication; however, an object can become stuck leading to wheezing and trouble breathing or swallowing. Examples of these objects can include coins or small toys, and even food such as peanuts and cut-up hot dogs.

Dr. Saad Saad has recommendations for new parents, as it can be a huge relief to know exactly how to react before a situation should ever occur. Most parents react initially by trying to scoop the object out of the child’s mouth or throat with their hand; however, Dr. Saad Saad recommends that parents avoid this, as it can push the object further down the throat and create more of a blockage.

Instead, the Heimlich maneuver can be performed by children who are above the age of five. To do this, the parent should wrap his or her hands around the waist of the child and thrust the hands into the abdomen, directly below the rib cage. With children who are five years old or younger, the first step should be to hold the child upside down, by his or her legs, while tapping on the back of the child. In most cases, the object will simply pop out. If the above methods do not work, the child must be taken immediately to the emergency room. Learn more about Dr. Saad Saad: and

Batteries and peanuts are just a few of the most dangerous objects for children to swallow. In the case of batteries, the acid leaking from inside can cause severe damage; similarly, peanuts are particularly dangerous as they can expand when combined with liquid.

Dr. Saad Saad’s advice comes from his years of experience working with over a thousand children, from infants to teenagers, and their parents. He recognizes the difficulty of being a parent and all of the fears that come with the territory, and hopes that parents can benefit from his advice and experience.
