J.D.com Becomes A Trendsetter in New Zealand’s Agribusiness Sector

When it comes to diversification, JD.com is perhaps the perfect example of this trend. Although the company never sold agricultural products on JD official website before, they have currently tapped onto the market. Their zeal to succeed in the agricultural sector was driven by the unmet needs that they saw in the Chinese market. Eventually, their efforts have culminated in them delivering apple and kiwifruit harvest to China from New Zealand.

Sales Driven by Dynamic Consumer Preference

JD.com’s market entrance has strengthened their ties with other critical players such as Rockit Global Limited and Zespri. One of the main factors that has contributed to the success of JD.com’s retail in fruits is the change in consumer tastes. Over the years, the majority of JD.com’s customers have preferred to consume imported high quality products as opposed to locally available produce. Data available form their database proves that a large portion of JD.com’s sales emanated from fruits imported from overseas. The 20% increase in imports was due to the need by their middle class and younger customers’ inclination to keenly watch on their nutrition and health. Available data reveals that exports from New Zealand to China have increased exponentially by over 80%. The sales currently stand at NZ$ 606 million.

Market Growth Spurred by Fruit Exports

New Zealand’s most famous export to China is Kiwifruit. Such positive indications point out that horticulture is a vital part of New Zealand. For instance, the industry currently employs more than 18,000 people in New Zealand alone, with over 2,600 growers of Kiwifruit in New Zealand. Another factor that has led to an increase in sales is the setting up of a flagship store on JD.com by Zespri. Such moves have enabled Zespri to tap into different consumer groups and increase their market share. Additionally, they have also expanded their footprint to include sales through Jingdong’s offline store, 7Fresh. Doing so has enabled Zespri to utilize the services of the top largest e-retailer in China.

The entry of Rockit in Jingdong

Not to be left behind, Rockit Global also realized the importance of setting up shop on JD.com. Subsequently, they have managed to tap into the Chinese market by launching their a flagship store, Rockit Apples on Jingdong.

Jingdong Is Bringing Their Customers New Ways To Recyle

An article entitled “JD Launches New Green Initiatives in Partnership with WWF Earth Hour Movement”, discusses JD’s partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) this year in the ongoing support of the Earth Hour environmental movement, launching a range of initiatives that include country-wide recycling programs and sustainable green packaging.

JD.com has been known for its impressive sustainability efforts from the beginning and they have recently teamed up with Nespresso to reduce waste even more. Many people are concerned about the environmental impact of throwing away the popular coffee capsules, but now customers can recycle their used cups from their own doorstep thanks to a partnership between Nespresso and Jingdong.

This is being made possible through the logistics capabilities of the Chinese online retailer that is the most popular in the country. Customers can now use a WeChat mini program from Nespresso to schedule a courier from the online retailer to pick up their used coffee capsules so that they don’t end up in the trash. In the past, this service was only available to larger customers like hotels, restaurants, and offices, but it has now been expanded to be available to the average consumer.

There are three recycling plants being used by this program in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. Depending on where the customer is located, a courier from JD.com will pick up the used cups from the customer and then bring it to the nearest recycling site.

The coffee grounds in the cups are then used to fertilize an eco-farm that is run by Nespresso while the aluminum is used to make items such as novelty knives and more that are branded with the company’s logo. Nespresso has stated that they are happy to be working with Jingdong on this recycling initiative.

There are many more green initiatives that are operated by both JD.com and Nespresso, but this is one that customers will be able to personally see the impact of. JD is working hard to keep waste out of dumps so they can be recycled into something else.

By working together, JD hopes to be able to have a positive impact on the environment as well as the view on how waste from Nespresso makers is treated. Through this program, customers can enjoy the convenience of single-serving coffee capsules while being conscious of how their waste from it is handled afterward. A representative of Jingdong stated that there will be similar initiatives in the future.

Betsy DeVos, Gracious but Tenacious Fighter for Education Reform

Betsy DeVos, the current U.S Secretary of Education, feels that it’s possible to hold contrary views without being contrary. She has core values that are as firm as steel, but she can communicate with others in ways that can be forthright without being combative or immovable.

Take, for instance, the certainly controversial issue of transgender students using the school restrooms of their gender identification. The Trump administration was about to announce that this policy would change, and DeVos met first with representatives of gay and transgender U.S. Department of Education staffers to issue a heads-up.

While her aides first communicated the fact, in her presence, that DeVos had been opposed to the change, the Secretary calmly and factually explained the change without editorializing. She then defended the policy change in a speech given to the Conservative Political Action Conference — because that was her duty.

DeVos stays ever-gracious in style and approach, but she’s driven to push for change that she thinks is necessary and beneficial, despite sometimes confronting waves of protest. A smile is not a sign of weakness to Secretary DeVos.

While she’s gotten plenty of pushback in her current assignment for an administration that seems to welcome friction, this term wouldn’t be her first time. DeVos has also found fractious audiences when leading the charge for charter schools and tuition vouchers in her native West Michigan (even starting a highly respected school in the process), and when chairing her state’s Republican party, passing legislation and working to unseat Michigan legislators who clashed with her.

One of those frequent policy clashes was on the subject of public funding of charter schools, including conservatively religious institutions, through voucher programs. While adversaries protested against the channeling of limited public school dollars to privately operated schools, DeVos pointed out the failures of the existing schools as an excuse to look outside the public arena for answers.

It was this growing reputation in the field of education reform that landed DeVos the top education position within the Trump administration.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, refers to DeVos as being personable, plain-spoken, but dangerous (a compliment from a union head), and cautions against underestimating the Secretary.

DeVos comes from wealth. Her family owned a billion-dollar auto parts business, but that was nothing compared to the in-laws’ financial situation. Rich DeVos, her father-in-law, co-founded Amway.

Through the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, the Secretary and her immediate family have donated tens of millions of dollars annually to regional and statewide causes in healthcare, arts and culture, civic causes and other pursuits. The extended family has donated billions of dollars more over the years.

The younger couple have also used their wealth to advance Betsy’s education goals and even start the renowned and tuition-free West Michigan Aviation Academy high school.

Betsy DeVos is, indeed, a fighter. She fights for education and structural changes that will benefit American children and the value of an American education, but she can still deliver results with a forthright gaze, a gracious word and an encouraging smile.
