Betsy Devos – the US Education Secretary

Betsy DeVos serves as the 11th United States Secretary of Education under the Donald Trump administration. Her ardent support for Republican causes and charter schools has defined her time as a politician. DeVos supports school choice. To her, this means giving students in poorer districts the opportunity to receive a better education through charter schools. If you were born in a poorer district with less-than-good schools, you were out of luck in the past. Charter schools changed that.

Two DeVos’s

Grand Rapids residents have struggled to reconcile the DeVos they knew with the DeVos who serves under President Donald Trump. During her time under Trump, the public has viewed DeVos as a controversial figure with some of her choices. In the past, residents knew DeVos as a generous and pragmatic politician, and even if they disliked her political stance, locals still saw her as a positive force in the community.

Contrast that with her time as Secretary of Education, critics have lambasted her as tone-deaf, unprepared and insulated. During interviews with people who knew her, the aforementioned three phrases popped up again and again.

Origins of Betsy DeVos

Betsy DeVos’s mother gave birth to her in 1958. She originally hailed from the wealthy Prince family. As she grew up, she was raised in the Christian Reformed Church of Holland, Michigan. Later, Betsy DeVos enrolled in a Christian school at Calvin College. This happened before she married Dick DeVos, a man whose family co-founded Amway, and he ran for governor in 2006. He lost.

Influential Family

Over the years, the DeVos family has contributed to several conservative, religious and political causes. Their undying support for charter schools has led to a transformation of the educational landscape in West Michigan. Some critics, in particular, those involved in public education, dislike charter schools because of how it siphons funds away from the public schools and make it harder for them to operate. However, if you have a bad leg and you have the opportunity to replace the leg with a better one, would you complain that it takes away funding from your broken leg? A broken school system doesn’t improve through more funding.

Surprising Political Leanings?

Most people don’t express surprise at Betsy DeVos’s political leanings based on her upbringing. Holland, Michigan, had many Dutch immigrants who held similar views that Betsy DeVos holds today. In fact, the Trump administration endorses the same views where equal treatment of making funds neutrally available is important.

People either love Betsy DeVos or they love to hate her. You don’t have a middle ground with this highly polarized and controversial figure. No matter the opinion on her, no one can deny that the DeVos family has held sway. They have a reputation as outspoken philanthropists that have made big changes in the world. In addition, they conduct business in Grand Rapids, and they have made big changes to the Grand Rapids city skyline through funding many of the city projects.

Fashions’ Future is Bright at the Academy of Art University

If fashion is your forte, the Academy of Art University may be just the place for you! Boasting a beautiful campus in San Francisco, California, and an online option for those who can’t make the move, this University is one of the premiere art institutes in the United States.

The Academy of Art University thrives on building a community of students and graduates that support one another throughout the process of achieving dreams and taking on the global market in all things art. Even online students have the option of chatting with classmates in class discussion areas.

On September 9, 2017, the Academy had their 21st runway show at Skylight Clarkson Square which included two collaborations between graduates. With seven collections provided by ten graduates of the University, this show proved to be yet another addition to the successes of this institution. The graduates proved to be a very diverse group, coming from not only all over the United States but ranging all the way to China. Even though these graduates spent countless days working on their collections, they literally only got “fifteen minutes of fame,” as that’s how long the runway show lasted.

The designers’ inspirations came from many different places, with Hailun Zhou from China stating that hers came from the personal experience she gained while out and about on a random days conquests and Eden Slezin being inspired by his “love affair” with vintage denim. It is evident that these designers had put a lot of thoughts, feelings, and passion into their collections before constructing and presenting them; one of the many things that were taught to them at the Academy of Art University.

Within the aspirations and beautiful designs shown throughout the fashion show, it is evident that the University is producing graduates who are thriving in their fields. Not only do they offer degrees in fashion, but in an exuberant amount of fields within the art, media, and design world. This is a university that truly cares about growing the art community and providing well-educated people to contribute to an already budding industry.

ClassDojo knows how to Listen to Teachers in order to Succeed

ClassDojo is an education-based application that is now a standard part of the modern educational system. This app has been around since 2011 and is the number one EdTech app in America. This education app has become the number one application because the app’s founders (Liam Don and Sam Chaudhary) listened to teachers.

Teachers are the main people on the front lines of the education system. They are the grunt workers who are in the trenches with students every day. Their classrooms are learning areas for teaching students. They not only help students to gain knowledge, they also build them up as people.

Educators need resources and tools that will help them to be successful at their jobs. Students want to be at their best and ClassDojo helps them with this process. The app gives teachers many resources for contacting parents. This is an essential part of interacting with students. When a pupil’s mom and/or dad is involved in the education process, a teacher usually has an easier school year. Most students also like the involvement of their parents as well.

The main thing to remember is that ClassDojo listens to teachers and their needs. They made an application that provides them with practical and useful features. These features include mindfulness training for helping to keep students level-headed and focused. They also offer text messaging and video features that allow teachers to communicate with parents in real time. ClassDojo wants to ensure that teachers have tools they need to make their school year great.

Dick And Betsy DeVos Makes Education Priority In Michigan

Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy have made education reform a centerpiece of the many positive works they have performed in their home state of Michigan. United States President Donald Trump acknowledged these efforts when he elevated Betsy DeVos to the position of Education Secretary for the country shortly after his election.

One contribution Dick DeVos is especially proud of is the West Michigan Aviation Academy he founded in 2010. The Academy is a charter high school that provides students with an education on many subjects pertaining to aviation in addition to the required high school curriculum in Michigan.

The DeVos’ have long operated under the belief that the educational opportunities for a child should not be limited by the financial position of their family. The West Michigan Aviation Academy provides an opportunity to see this concept in practice.

The school is tuition-free for its students. The state contributes $7,500 toward the cost to educate each student enrolled in the academy. The DeVos’ have also provided more than $7 million of their own money to operate the school.

The result is a diverse group of students who are both happy and doing well in their studies. Twenty-eight percent of the students attending the Academy are either Hispanic or African-American. This is higher than the percentage of people living in Kent County who are counted among these minority groups.

The first three classes graduated by the academy posted SAT scores above the average for students in Michigan. Alec Gallimore, a dean at Michigan University explains he has visited the Academy on multiple occasions and says he is impressed with what is being accomplished at the school.

The growth of the West Michigan Aviation Academy has been just as spectacular as the performance of its students. The school began in office space it was allowed to use at the Gerald Ford International Airport. Eighty students made up the school’s first class.

Today, more than 600 students attend the Academy and the school owns its own building. Students from seven Michigan counties attend the Academy. One student, who lives 150 miles from the school, stays with friends during the week and returns home to see her family on weekends. She says her family was unsure of the arrangement at first but things have worked out fine for her.

Betsy DeVos expressed her belief at a rally not long after her appointment as Education Secretary that the problems plaguing the education system in America can not be solved by bigger government. Mrs. DeVos believes listening to parents and providing local governments with the tools they need is the way to improve schools in the nation. It is obvious by his actions that her husband, Dick, agrees with her.

Nitin Khanna Notes The Key To Success In Business

Nitin Khanna has spent several decades in the investment world, with much of this being at the helm of his own companies. Throughout this time, his investment portfolio has included quite a significant number of industries, with this diverse range helping him to minimize the risk involved in his investments. However, Nitin Khanna was first involved in the technology industry, with his first company, Saber Corp, achieving a considerable amount of success in the niche. The Portland-based Saber Corp was founded in 1997 and quickly grew to be the largest IT solutions company serving state governments.

After a few years with Saber Corp, Nitin Khanna sold the technology firm to industry giant EDS before working with the larger business for a few years afterward. However, Khanna soon left the company to continue on his own path, which led to him founding MergerTech, a technology-focused investment and financial advice company that began to expand relatively quickly. As CEO of the firm, Khanna led the majority of the company’s more prominent negotiations and strategies, which subsequently led to success and continued expansion. Aside from MergerTech, Khanna has been involved with a few other companies in recent years.

One prominent example was Cura Cannabis Solutions, which he founded in 2015 to capitalize on the relatively young cannabis market in the United States, which has been growing considerably in recent years. Nitin Khanna has also been involved with philanthropic causes, such as the Portland Children’s Museum and the Urban League of Portland, where he served as a board member.

Though the companies that Nitin Khanna has been involved in have been spread across a broad range of industries, his leadership with them has had a few things in common. One of the most significant of these is the fact that he’s always been execution-focused. Khanna has highlighted the fact that having an idea for a business can be relatively easy; acting on and executing the idea successfully is what takes work, and is one of the more notable aspects of what differentiates winners and losers in an industry. This is especially true given the fact that there can be hundreds of potential competitors at any given time.

Betsy DeVos Continues To Stand On The Merit Of The Hard Work She Has Done For Her Nation

Betsy DeVos isn’t the kind of politician who takes the easy way out when it comes to the matters she cares about the most. While many politicians side-step issues while attempting to pull the shade over people’s eyes, she has always been extremely forward about her positions. That is why there was some confusion when her position related to an important educational matter was unclear to some people.

The matter in question had to do with a federal policy that president Trump was about to rescind. This policy had made it possible for transgender students to use any bathroom they pleased as long as it aligned with their gender identity. DeVos had held a meeting with a gay and transgender employee representative from the department of education to let them know of Trump’s plans. During this meeting, it was reported that her aide had told the representative that DeVos was opposed to the move by the president. What confused some people was not just the fact that she was present when the president made the announcement. It was that she never showed her disapproval of Trump’s decision in public.

Those who have followed the career of Betsy DeVos for any amount of time know that she is not one to back down from controversy. She does her best to work with politicians from both sides of the aisle but has no problem with telling it like it is when it is needed. In Michigan, she is known as a woman who fights for the rights of the people, and she is also known for her relentless commitment to the ideals she believes in. Mike Cox is a Republican who once served as a state attorney, and he recently commented that DeVos is a determined woman who usually stays focused on her goals until she achieves them.

Something that makes Betsy DeVos special is her imaginative way of accomplishing some of her goals. For years, she has supported the expansion of charter schools in Florida. She recently made a public appearance with a man whose views are very different than her own, and she did so to support a set of charter schools he founded. This man was, none other than, the rapper known as Pitbull. This took many people by surprise, but those who are familiar with DeVos know that she has always been willing to build partnerships that will benefit the people.

Betsy DeVos received her college education from Calvin College, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics. She has served in many different organizations that work towards improving the educational system and continues to fight for student’s rights. In Michigan, she has continuously supported the expansion of charter schools, and she has also worked with many other states to achieve the same ends.

Rocketship Education Closes the Achievement Gap

Rocketship Education is a charter school that was started in California, but today serves students around the nation. Like most charter schools, Rocketship Education was created by teachers, parents, community activists, and entrepreneurs. All people who have a stake in the children of the future help to create and manage these schools to help ensure that they are successful for all student populations. It was a team effort to get up and running and is still a team effort to keep it operating. Rocketship Education has the main goal of teaching and engaging students to help them succeed and grow as people.

While all of the students that attend Rocketship Education schools are on different proficiency levels, the teachers and administration at Rocketship Education are still held responsible for closing the achievement gap. The achievement gap is the distance in proficiency in each subject for all students. All students, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender, or those with or without disabilities, and regardless of where they start the year at academically are responsible for ending on the same level. This is an incredibly difficult thing to do. For example, if you have a student in fourth grade that enters the year reading on a first-grade level and another student who starts the year reading on a third-grade level, by the end of the year these students should be performing very similarly.

Closing the achievement gap is a difficult task for any school but Rocketship Education has made closing the achievement gap part of their mission. To help close the gap, they have implemented teacher-led instruction, the collaboration between stakeholders, and technology to reach all of their students. They have learned from past criticisms and are using the critiques to change the way they operate their schools. They have used their past successes and failures to further the education of each student to ensure that all students are successful. By closing the achievement gap, Rocketship Education is ensuring that all of their students are set up for success both in and out of the classroom.
